[DebugInfo][RemoveDIs] Make dropping variable locations explicit (#72399)
In present-day debug-info, when you delete all instructions, you delete
all their debug-info with it because debug-info is stored in
instructions. With debug-info stored in DPValue objects however,
deleting instructions causes DPValue objects to clump together into a
large blob of debug-info that hangs around in the block, as nothing has
explicitly deleted it.

To restore this behaviour, scatter calls to dropDbgValues around in
places that used to delete chunks of dbg.values, for example during
stripDebugInfo and in the code that deletes everything after an
Unreachable instruction. DCE is another example.

The tests with --try... added to them are new scenarios where we can now
correctly replicate the "normal" debug-info behaviour. Alas, there's no
explicit test for the opt -strip-debug option though (in dbg.value mode
or DPValue mode).

b9337b108e [ADCE] Preserve MemorySSA if only debug instructions are removed
As we've seen in

3f8027fb67 [test] Update some test cases to use -passes when specifying the pipeline
This updates transform test cases for
  ADCE
  AddDiscriminators
  AggressiveInstCombine
  AlignmentFromAssumptions
  ArgumentPromotion
  BDCE
  CalledValuePropagation
  DCE

  WholeProgramDevirt
to use the -passes syntax when specifying the pipeline.

Given that LLVM_ENABLE_NEW_PASS_MANAGER isn't set to off (which is
a deprecated feature) the updated test cases already used the new
pass manager, but they were using the legacy syntax when specifying
the passes to run. This patch can be seen as a step toward deprecating
that interface.

This patch also removes some redundant RUN lines. Here I am
referring to test cases that had multiple RUN lines verifying both
the legacy "-passname" syntax and the new "-passes=passname" syntax.
Since we switched the default pass manager to "new PM" both RUN lines
have verified the new PM version of the pass (more or less wasting
time running the same test twice), unless LLVM_ENABLE_NEW_PASS_MANAGER
is set to "off". It is assumed that it is enough to run these tests
with the new pass manager now.

3dd8c9176b [LICM] Remove AST-based implementation
MSSA-based LICM has been enabled by default for a few years now.
This drops the old AST-based implementation. Using loop(licm) will
result in a fatal error, the use of loop-mssa(licm) is required
(or just licm, which defaults to loop-mssa).

Note that the core canSinkOrHoistInst() logic has to retain AST
support for now, because it is shared with LoopSink.

f8a42bca28 [ADCE] Fix incorrect reporting of CFG changes
This patch fixes 2 related bugs in ADCE:
- `performDeadCodeElimination` does not report changes if it did ONLY

- When control flow removal is enabled, new pass manager does not

Both can lead to incorrect loop info after ADCE that does only CFG changes.

2c864551df [DebugInfo] Add DILabel metadata and intrinsic llvm.dbg.label.
In order to set breakpoints on labels and list source code around
labels, we need collect debug information for labels, i.e., label
name, the function label belong, line number in the file, and the
address label located. In order to keep these information in LLVM
IR and to allow backend to generate debug information correctly.
We create a new kind of metadata for labels, DILabel. The format
of DILabel is

!DILabel(scope: !1, name: "foo", file: !2, line: 3)

We hope to keep debug information as much as possible even the
code is optimized. So, we create a new kind of intrinsic for label
metadata to avoid the metadata is eliminated with basic block.
The intrinsic will keep existing if we keep it from optimized out.
The format of the intrinsic is

llvm.dbg.label(metadata !1)

It has only one argument, that is the DILabel metadata. The
intrinsic will follow the label immediately. Backend could get the
label metadata through the intrinsic's parameter.

We also create DIBuilder API for labels to be used by Frontend.
Frontend could use createLabel() to allocate DILabel objects, and use
insertLabel() to insert llvm.dbg.label intrinsic in LLVM IR.

75819aedf6 [PR27284] Reverse the ownership between DICompileUnit and DISubprogram.
Currently each Function points to a DISubprogram and DISubprogram has a
scope field. For member functions the scope is a DICompositeType. DIScopes
point to the DICompileUnit to facilitate type uniquing.

Distinct DISubprograms (with isDefinition: true) are not part of the type
hierarchy and cannot be uniqued. This change removes the subprograms
list from DICompileUnit and instead adds a pointer to the owning compile
unit to distinct DISubprograms. This would make it easy for ThinLTO to
strip unneeded DISubprograms and their transitively referenced debug info.

Motivation
----------

Materializing DISubprograms is currently the most expensive operation when
doing a ThinLTO build of clang.

We want the DISubprogram to be stored in a separate Bitcode block (or the
same block as the function body) so we can avoid having to expensively
deserialize all DISubprograms together with the global metadata. If a
function has been inlined into another subprogram we need to store a
reference the block containing the inlined subprogram.

Attached to https://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=27284 is a python script
that updates LLVM IR testcases to the new format.

e8eb94a9a5 ADCE: Remove debug info intrinsics in dead scopes
During ADCE, track which debug info scopes still have live references
from the code, and delete debug info intrinsics for the dead ones.

These intrinsics describe the locations of variables (in registers or
stack slots). If there's no code left corresponding to a variable's
scope, then there's no way to reference the variable in the debugger and
it doesn't matter what its value is.

I add a DEBUG printout when the described location in an SSA register,
in case it helps some trying to track down why locations get lost.
However, we still delete these; the scope itself isn't attached to any
real code, so the ship has already sailed.

The personality routine currently lives in the LandingPadInst.

This isn't desirable because:
- All LandingPadInsts in the same function must have the same
personality routine. This means that each LandingPadInst beyond the
first has an operand which produces no additional information.

- There is ongoing work to introduce EH IR constructs other than
LandingPadInst. Moving the personality routine off of any one

than have N different places a personality function can sneak onto an

79e6c74981 [opaque pointer type] Add textual IR support for explicit type parameter to getelementptr instruction
One of several parallel first steps to remove the target type of pointers,
replacing them with a single opaque pointer type.

This adds an explicit type parameter to the gep instruction so that when the
first parameter becomes an opaque pointer type, the type to gep through is
still available to the instructions.

* This doesn't modify gep operators, only instructions (operators will be
  handled separately)

* Textual IR changes only. Bitcode (including upgrade) and changing the
in-memory representation will be in separate changes.

* geps of vectors are transformed as:
    getelementptr <4 x float*> %x, ...
  ->getelementptr float, <4 x float*> %x, ...
Then, once the opaque pointer type is introduced, this will ultimately look
  like:
    getelementptr float, <4 x ptr> %x
with the unambiguous interpretation that it is a vector of pointers to float.

* address spaces remain on the pointer, not the type:
    getelementptr float addrspace(1)* %x
  ->getelementptr float, float addrspace(1)* %x
  Then, eventually:
    getelementptr float, ptr addrspace(1) %x

Importantly, the massive amount of test case churn has been automated by
same crappy python code. I had to manually update a few test cases that
wouldn't fit the script's model (r228970,r229196,r229197,r229198). The
python script just massages stdin and writes the result to stdout, I
then wrapped that in a shell script to handle replacing files, then
using the usual find+xargs to migrate all the files.

From llvm/src/tools/polly:
find test/ -name *.ll | xargs ./apply.sh

After that, check-all (with llvm, clang, clang-tools-extra, lld,

The extra 'rm' in the apply.sh script is due to a few files in clang's test

   Transforms/BranchFolding, a .s file each in DebugInfo/AArch64 and
CodeGen/PowerPC, and one in CodeGen/SI which is now failing and has been
   XFAILED).

 - This commit also fixes a bunch of config files to use config.root instead of
   older copy-pasted code.

1880092722 Change tests from "opt %s" to "opt < %s" so that opt doesn't see the
input filename so that opt doesn't print the input filename in the
output so that grep lines in the tests don't unintentionally match
strings in the input filename.
