Summary:
This code is intended to block transformations if the call isn't
present, however the way it's coded it silently lets it pass if the
definition doesn't exist at all. This previously was always valid since
we included the runtime as one giant blob so everything was always
there, but now that we want to move towards separate ones, it's not
quite correct.
We were previously checking this after recursing on all callers, but if
we already have a single allocation type there is no need to even look
at any callers. Didn't show a significant improvement overall, but it
does reduce the count of times we enter the identifyClones and do other
checks.
Add initial parsing/sema support for new assumption clause so clause can
be specified. For now, it's ignored, just like the others.
Added support for 'no_openmp_construct' to release notes.
Testing
- Updated appropriate LIT tests.
- Testing: check-all
Tested call-graph matching on some of Meta's large services, it works to
reuse some renamed function profiles, no negative perf or significant
build speed regression observed. Turned it on by default for CSSPGO
mode.
This change addresses a number of issues with the support added by
PR121985 which were exposed through more exhaustive testing,
specifically places that needed updates to perform correct graph updates
in the presence of cycles.
A new test case is added that reproduces these issues, and the default
is flipped back to enabling this handling.
The two "if" conditions are mutually exclusive, so we can put them in
any order. Reversing the order allows us to remove
Blocks.contains(IncomingBlock) in one of the "if" conditions.
An argument graph node without uses forms a trivial SCC, which will
already be handled by the preceding branch.
If a node in the SCC points to a node with empty uses, then it will
be part of a different SCC, and as such assumed to be capturing
if it does not have an attribute. There is no need to handle them
separately.
When we apply cloning decisions in the ThinLTO backend, we need to find
the corresponding summary for each function in the IR, and in some cases
for callee functions. This is complicated when the function was a
promoted local, in which case the GUID was formed from the hash of the
original source file prepended to the function name. Those functions
can be identified by the fact that they were given a ".llvm." suffix
during promotion.
We previously didn't do this correctly for promoted locals imported from
other modules, as we only tried the current module source name. This led
to crashes, in particular when the current module also had an local
function of the same original name. In particular, we were attempting to
iterate through the wrong summary's callsites, and there were fewer than
in the actual function so we accessed data off the end (in a release
build with assertion checking off - with assertion checking on we double
check the stack ids and that would have failed). Even if we hadn't
crashed or hit an assert, we could have applied the wrong cloning
decisions, leading to unsats at link time.
Luckily, function importing attaches thinlto_src_file metadata
containing the original source file name to all imported functions. It
normally doesn't do this by default, however, it always does if MemProf
context disambiguation is enabled. Therefore, we can just look to see if
the function contains this metadata and if so use it to recreate the
original GUID.
A similar issue can occur when looking for the ValueInfo / GUID of
a direct tail call to see if we synthesized a callsite record for a
missing tail call frame. In that case, the callee function may be a
declaration, if we imported its caller but not the callee function
definition. Because imported declarations don't get the thinlto_src_file
metadata, we instead look at its caller (which works because this
happens very early in the backend before any inlining).
Add a new AutoUpgrade function to convert some legacy nvvm.annotations
metadata to function level attributes. These attributes are quicker to
look-up so improve compile time and are more idiomatic than using
metadata which should not include required information that changes the
meaning of the program.
Currently supported annotations are:
- !"kernel" -> ptx_kernel calling convention
- !"align" -> alignstack parameter attributes (return not yet supported)
This patch implements an LLVM IR pass, named kernel-info, that reports
various statistics for codes compiled for GPUs. The ultimate goal of
these statistics to help identify bad code patterns and ways to mitigate
them. The pass operates at the LLVM IR level so that it can, in theory,
support any LLVM-based compiler for programming languages supporting
GPUs. It has been tested so far with LLVM IR generated by Clang for
OpenMP offload codes targeting NVIDIA GPUs and AMD GPUs.
By default, the pass runs at the end of LTO, and options like
``-Rpass=kernel-info`` enable its remarks. Example `opt` and `clang`
command lines appear in `llvm/docs/KernelInfo.rst`. Remarks include
summary statistics (e.g., total size of static allocas) and individual
occurrences (e.g., source location of each alloca). Examples of its
output appear in tests in `llvm/test/Analysis/KernelInfo`.
This PR removes the old `nocapture` attribute, replacing it with the new
`captures` attribute introduced in #116990. This change is
intended to be essentially NFC, replacing existing uses of `nocapture`
with `captures(none)` without adding any new analysis capabilities.
Making use of non-`none` values is left for a followup.
Some notes:
* `nocapture` will be upgraded to `captures(none)` by the bitcode
reader.
* `nocapture` will also be upgraded by the textual IR reader. This is to
make it easier to use old IR files and somewhat reduce the test churn in
this PR.
* Helper APIs like `doesNotCapture()` will check for `captures(none)`.
* MLIR import will convert `captures(none)` into an `llvm.nocapture`
attribute. The representation in the LLVM IR dialect should be updated
separately.
Summary:
Currently, we only use `-mlink-builtin-bitcode` for non-LTO NVIDIA
compiliations. This has the problem that it will internalize the RPC
client symbol which needs to be visible to the host. To counteract that,
I put `retain` on it, but this also prevents optimizations on the global
itself, so the passes we have that remove the symbol don't work on
OpenMP anymore. This patch does the dumbest solution, adding a special
string check for it in clang. Not the best solution, the runner up would
be to have a clang attribute for `externally_initialized` because those
can't be internalized, but that might have some unfortunate
side-effects. Alternatively we could make NVIDIA compilations do LTO all
the time, but that would affect some users and it's harder than I
thought.
Note that PointerUnion::dyn_cast has been soft deprecated in
PointerUnion.h:
// FIXME: Replace the uses of is(), get() and dyn_cast() with
// isa<T>, cast<T> and the llvm::dyn_cast<T>
Literal migration would result in dyn_cast_if_present (see the
definition of PointerUnion::dyn_cast), but this patch uses cast
because we know which alternative to expect in the ternary expression.
As part of the "RemoveDIs" work to eliminate debug intrinsics, we're
replacing methods that use Instruction*'s as positions with iterators. A
number of these (such as getFirstNonPHIOrDbg) are sufficiently
infrequently used that we can just replace the pointer-returning version
with an iterator-returning version, hopefully without much/any
disruption.
Thus this patch has getFirstNonPHIOrDbg and
getFirstNonPHIOrDbgOrLifetime return an iterator, and updates all
call-sites. There are no concerns about the iterators returned being
converted to Instruction*'s and losing the debug-info bit: because the
methods skip debug intrinsics, the iterator head bit is always false
anyway.
Specifying a kernel with the `ptx_kernel` or `amdgpu_kernel` calling
convention is a more idiomatic and compile-time performant than using
the `nvvm.annoation !"kernel"` metadata.
Transition OMPIRBuilder to use calling conventions for PTX kernels and
no longer emit `nvvm.annoation`. Update OpenMPOpt to work with kernels
specified via calling convention as well as metadata. Update OpenMP
tests to use the calling conventions.
The undetectable FMV features predres and ls64 have been removed,
therefore the optimization is now re-enabled. The llvm testsuite
Graviton4 bots are expected to remain green.
As part of the "RemoveDIs" project, BasicBlock::iterator now carries a
debug-info bit that's needed when getFirstNonPHI and similar feed into
instruction insertion positions. Call-sites where that's necessary were
updated a year ago; but to ensure some type safety however, we'd like to
have all calls to getFirstNonPHI use the iterator-returning version.
This patch changes a bunch of call-sites calling getFirstNonPHI to use
getFirstNonPHIIt, which returns an iterator. All these call sites are
where it's obviously safe to fetch the iterator then dereference it. A
follow-up patch will contain less-obviously-safe changes.
We'll eventually deprecate and remove the instruction-pointer
getFirstNonPHI, but not before adding concise documentation of what
considerations are needed (very few).

This patch adds a (guaranteed dereferenceable) iterator-taking
moveBefore, and changes a bunch of call-sites where it's obviously safe
to change to use it by just calling getIterator() on an instruction

Checking mode aims to help diagnose and confirm undefined behavior. In
most cases, source code don't cast pointers between unrelated types for
virtual calls, so we expect direct calls in the frequent branch and
debug trap in the unlikely branch.
This way, the overhead of checking mode is not higher than an indirect
call promotion for a hot callsite as long as the callsite doesn't run the debug trap
branch.
Remove edge iterator parameters from the various helpers that move edges
onto other nodes, and their associated iterator update code, and instead
iterate over copies of the edge lists in the caller loops. This also
avoids the need to increment these iterators at every early loop
continue.
This simplifies the code, makes it less error prone when updating, and
in particular, facilitates adding handling of recursive contexts.
There were no measurable compile time and memory overhead effects for a
large target.

Literal migration would result in dyn_cast_if_present (see the
definition of PointerUnion::dyn_cast), but this patch uses cast
because we expect the arguments to be of the requested types. Note
that all these cases have assert and/or dereferences just after cast,
implying that the return value from cast must be nonnull.

We pass in a pointer to an Edge iterator to
moveEdgeToExistingCalleeClone, so that it can be correctly updated when
we remove edges during an edge iteration. We were not dereferencing this
pointer in one case, meaning we would increment the pointer and not the
iterator as intended.
This did not cause any issues, as it turns out that we would simply skip
the edge on the next iteration as it was already appropriately handled.
While in theory this incurred some extra compilation time, in practice
for a large application the effect was not significant. I confirmed that
there was no effect to any cloning from the fix.
I plan to send a follow up change to avoid the need to pass in an
iterator at all and simplify / consolidate the handling in the caller,
but want to fix this in case something requires a revert of the follow
on fix.
Adds `optimize-non-fmv-callers` (disabled by default) as a short term
workaround to keep the llvm testsuite bots green, until we decide what
is the right solution for the problem which was previously addressed
with https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/123383.
IndexCall is a simple wrapper around:
PointerUnion<CallsiteInfo *, AllocInfo *>
Now, because we don't have CastInfo for IndexCall, we would have to
use getBase like so:
dyn_cast_if_present<CallsiteInfo *>(Call.getBase())
This patch adds simplify_type<IndexCall>, which in turn enables
CastInfo for IndexCall, so we can drop getBase like so::
dyn_cast_if_present<CallsiteInfo *>(Call)
This fixes a runtime regression in the llvm testsuite:
https://lab.llvm.org/buildbot/#/builders/198/builds/1237
On clang-aarch64-sve2-vla:
predres
FAIL
A 'predres' version is unexpectedly trapping on GravitonG4. My
explanation is that when the caller in not a versioned function, the
compiler exclusively relies on the command line option, or target
attribute to deduce whether a feature is available. However, there is no
guarantee that in reality the host supports those implied features.
This is a quickfix. We may rather change the mcpu option in the llvm
testsuite build instead.
To deduce whether the optimization is legal we need to compare the target
features between caller and callee versions. The criteria for bypassing
the resolver are the following:
* If the callee's feature set is a subset of the caller's feature set,
then the callee is a candidate for direct call.
* Among such candidates the one of highest priority is the best match
and it shall be picked, unless there is a version of the callee with
higher priority than the best match which cannot be picked from a
higher priority caller (directly or through the resolver).
* For every higher priority callee version than the best match, there
is a higher priority caller version whose feature set availability
is implied by the callee's feature set.
Example:
Callers and Callees are ordered in decreasing priority.
The arrows indicate successful call redirections.
Caller Callee Explanation
=========================================================================
mops+sve2 --+--> mops all the callee versions are subsets of the
| caller but mops has the highest priority
|
mops --+ sve2 between mops and default callees, mops wins
sve sve between sve and default callees, sve wins
but sve2 does not have a high priority caller
default -----> default sve (callee) implies sve (caller),
sve2(callee) implies sve (caller),
mops(callee) implies mops(caller)
` forallInterferingAccesses` is a hotspot and for large modules these
changes make a measurable improvement in compilation time.
For LTO kernel compilation of 519.clvleaf (SPEChpc 2021) I measured the
following:
```
| Measured times (s) | Average | speedup
--------------------+------------------------+---------+---------
Baseline | 33.268 33.332 33.275 | 33.292 | 0%
Cache "kernel" | 30.543 30.339 30.607 | 30.496 | 9.2%
templatize callback | 30.981 30.97 30.964 | 30.972 | 7.5%
Both changes | 29.284 29.201 29.053 | 29.179 | 14.1%
```
To be conservative, explicitly exclude byval arguments, which
doesNotCapture() would otherwise allow. Even if byval has an
initializes attribute, it would only apply to the implicit
copy.
Since byval arguments are passed via a hidden copy of the pointee, they
do not have the same semantics as normal pointer arguments. The callee
cannot capture or write to the pointer and the copy is a read of the
pointer.
Note that PointerUnion::is have been soft deprecated in
PointerUnion.h:
// FIXME: Replace the uses of is(), get() and dyn_cast() with
// isa<T>, cast<T> and the llvm::dyn_cast<T>
In this patch, I'm calling call().getBase() for an instance of
PointerUnion. call() alone would return an instance of IndexCall,
which wraps PointerUnion. Note that isa<> cannot directly accept an
instance of IndexCall, at least without defining CastInfo.
I'm not touching PointerUnion::dyn_cast for now because it's a bit
complicated; we could blindly migrate it to dyn_cast_if_present, but
we should probably use dyn_cast when the operand is known to be
non-null.
The preprocessor definition used to enable asserts and the one that
`llvm::Error` and `llvm::Expected` use to ensure all created instances are
checked are not the same. By making these checks inside of an `assert` in cases
where errors are not expected, certain build configurations would trigger
runtime failures (e.g. `-DLLVM_ENABLE_ASSERTIONS=OFF
-DLLVM_UNREACHABLE_OPTIMIZE=ON`).
The `llvm::cantFail()` function, which was intended for this use case, is used
by this patch in place of `assert` to prevent these runtime failures. In tests,
new preprocessor definitions based on `ASSERT_THAT_EXPECTED` and
`EXPECT_THAT_EXPECTED` are used instead, to avoid silent failures in release
builds.
Optionally (by default) no longer mark callsite nodes as Recursive,
which means they would be automatically skipped during cloning. This was
too conservative as it prevents cloning of any callsite that showed up
in any recursive cycle, even for non-recursive contexts.
While this will enable partial cloning of recursive contexts, the
recursive calls themselves will not be updated to call the correct
clone, possibly leading to some unnecessary but benign cloning and
affecting bytes hinted reporting. To prevent this, optional support
looks for recursive cycles in contexts during cloning and removes
those contexts from cloning. This requires some additional runtime
overhead, so is disabled by default for now.
Support for correct cloning of recursive cycles is WIP.
Bail out negative length while inferring initializes attr. Otherwise it
causes an assertion error:
`Attribute 'initializes' does not support unordered ranges`
Optionally unconditionally hint allocations as cold or not cold during
the cloning step if the percentage of bytes allocated is at least that
of the given threshold. This is similar to PR120301 which supports this
during matching, but enables the same behavior during cloning, to reduce
the false positives that can be addressed by cloning at the cost of
carrying the additional size metadata/summary.
Don't unnecessarily clone for a caller that wasn't matched to a call
instruction.
This necessitated updated a couple of tests that were either
unnecessarily cloning or unnecessarily processing an allocation and
hinting it not cold.
ListSeparator from StringExtras.h is essentially the same as
FieldSeparator being removed in this patch. ListSeparator returns the
empty string on the first use via "operator StringRef()". It returns
", " on subsequent uses.
